I'm so against offshore drilling! I used to get covered in oil when surfing off of campus point at UCSB

We had a disaster here when 72,000 tonnes of crude oil spilled from the Sea Empress over six-days in February 1996, after the tanker ran aground off St Anne's Head, Pembrokeshire, polluting around 200 km of Pembrokeshire coastline, affecting 35 sites of special scientific interest, 20 National Trust properties as well as marine and nature reserves. It was horrendous - black oil covered beaches and sea and birds - and the smell - I'll never forget it.
There was a huge clean up operation - hundreds of volunteers as well as the official clean up teams and they did an amazing job.
Although there must have been some long term damage thanks to a quick reaction and huge effort there doesn't seem to have been any catastrophic long term effects on wildlife.
Regulations concerning tankers approaching the coast have been tightened and thank goodness applications for off shore drilling have so far been refused as we are in an area of outstanding natural beauty and conservation. he trouble is They know oil is there so how long the conservationists can hold the day I don't know.

yeah I was horrified that they slashed the fine for the Exxon valdez disaster. Im pretty sure we are aproaching peak oil...in the next few years at least. Of course now the North pole is likely to go ice free during the Summer, that will open up some more areas for exploitation. Its an addiction, we are all junkies and big oil companies know that junkies will do anything to get their fix.
